Bubbly Creek Service Day for Today 5/8 Cancelled

Due to projected weather conditions for today in Chicago, as well as recent heavy rainfall and resulting waterway contamination by combined sewage overflows, the scheduled SUST community service trip to Bubbly Creek for today 5/8 is cancelled. Rest assured, though, that future service outings to Canal Origins Park and the storied shoreline will be scheduled in the future. Just watch the SUST blog for announcements of upcoming service opportunities this summer and next fall!

Meanwhile, check out this info from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District about the occurrence of Combined Sewage Overflows in Chicago’s waterways, which negatively impact water quality during rainy days — especially in Bubbly Creek’s industrialized channel. Also see this recent op-ed in the Sun-Times by Friends of the Chicago River about the need to eliminate CSOs and reduce pollution in our waterways. Finally, check out this Water Conservation Guide from Friends of the Chicago River for tips on how we as citizens can help mitigate CSOs.

    Hi SUST Team,

I’m a Sustainability Studies Alumni and I have and exciting opportunity to share if you wouldn’t mind passing it along:

I hope this email finds you well! I recently started a new job in Boulder at Popsockets and participate in the Sustainability Committee here. I’m not sure if you know what a Popsocket is.. it’s a small grip that sticks to the back of your phone for easier use and acts as a phone stand. Popsockets are not the most sustainable products considering they’re small pieces of rubber, plastic, and glue that can be interchangeable with different styles, or different Poptops.

Luckily, we have a great Social Compliance Team who wants to change the way we think about sustainability and the environment regarding our product. This being said, there is an internship opportunity opening up for this summer. It’s a 12 week paid internship (I believe $17 an hour!) which will revolve around the life-cycle of a Popsocket and creating a company-wide training program regarding sustainability and social compliance.

This internship would preferably go to someone who has experience in product life-cycles, a grad student, and/or someone who is able to be local in Boulder for all or part of the 12 week internship. Please share this with your peers, Sustainability majors or not! I think this is a fantastic opportunity and I hope to get someone from Roosevelt out to Colorful Colorado!

    Thanks so much,

    *SHANNON CONWAY*
