The SUST program is offering a full slate of courses for the Fall 2013 semester at the Chicago and Schaumburg Campuses as well as online. Most classes begin Monday, September 9th, so there’s plenty of time yet to enroll. Each section has several seats available, though some are filling quickly!
At the Chicago Campus, we are offering an evening section of SUST 210 The Sustainable Future (Mon 6-8:30pm); a Friday afternoon/hybrid section of SUST 220 Water (five meetings from 11:30am to 4pm, plus online); a Thurs evening section of SUST 230 Food (6-8:30pm); SUST 320 Sprawl, Transportation, & Planning (Tues 6-8:30pm); and a special Field Museum-based section of SUST 330 Biodiversity (Wed 9am-1pm).
Several of these courses will incorporate field-based experiences throughout the semester, which you can see past examples of here on this blog as well as on Prof. Mike Bryson’s faculty blog.
- Students in SUST 330 Biodiversity will meet in the Zoology Department of the Field Museum of Natural History under the direction of RU Prof. Julian Kerbis Peterhans, who is also adjunct curator of mammals at the FMNH. You can read Prof. Peterhans’ dispatches from his Fulbright year in 2012-13 working in the forests of Uganda on biodiversity surveys, forest conservation, and small mammal ecology.
- As in past semesters, SUST 220 Water will feature several unique and adventurous field trips during its Friday sessions, including a planned canoe trip on the Chicago River (Sept 20), a tour of the world’s largest wastewater treatment plant in Stickney, IL (Oct 11), and active participation in the Great Lakes Bioneers environmental sustainability conference to be held at RU’s Chicago Campus (Nov 1).
At the Schaumburg Campus we are featuring for the first time the SUST 240 Waste course, scheduled for Wednesday evenings (6:30-9pm). This class will meet in an innovative and convenient bi-weekly format and utilize online interaction in the “off” weeks, in addition to potentially engaging in what would be the first waste audit of the trash/recycling efforts at the Schaumburg Campus. Last but not least are several online offerings, which are always in high demand: the aforementioned SUST 210 The Sustainable Future, which will likely make significant contributions to the Schaumburg’s Sustainable Future blog/website, as it did in Spring 2013; SUST 230 Food; SUST 310 Energy & Climate Change; and SUST 330 Biodiversity.
Advising and registration are still underway for the Fall 2013 semester. Current RU students should contact their advisor to discuss spring (and summer) course selections and sign up for classes while they are still available.
