Roosevelt University celebrates Sustainability Week today through Thursday, Oct. 23-25! Presented by the RU Green student organization, Sustainability Week features a terrific array of events, including an appearance by acclaimed author/activist Derrick Jensen on Oct. 24th and many other speakers, informational sessions, films, and activities. All events are free and open to the public, and unless otherwise noted take place at RU’s downtown Chicago campus in the new Wabash Building (on Wabash between Congress and Van Buren), a 32-story LEED-certified structure.
Today, Oct. 23rd
GHABIT Green Wheel of Fortune Booth, 10am-2pm, Dining Center (2nd floor)–Participate in Ghabit’s Green Wheel of Fortune to answer green habits and win fabulous prizes.
Campus Sustainability Virtual Panel, 2 pm, WB 418–Paul Matthews, Asst. VP of Campus Planning and Operations, will represent RU in an unprecedented virtual panel discussion detailing the various efforts of Chicagoland college campuses to go green, particularly highlighting RU’s efforts. Sustainable Living Workshop, 4 pm, WB 418–Fred Carter of the Black Oaks Center for Sustainable Living (Pembroke, IL) will share enlightening and applicable information on sustainable living practices–organic gardening, earth building, composting, etc.
End:Civ (Film Screening), 8 pm, WB 418—An eye-opening documentary based upon the work of Derrick Jensen (who will speak on Wed, Oct. 24), regarding the cause and effect of the current state of environmental degradation.
Wednesday, Oct. 24th
Coinciding and collaborating with Delta Gamma Pi’s Multi-cultural Day, we are proud to host a virtual, carbon neutral presentation by acclaimed author, Derrick Jensen (Endgame, A Culture of Make Believe, Deep Green Resistance, etc.), before which RU Green will present a multi-media presentation entitled “The Color of Climate Change”, illustrating the global impact of Western activities.

Color of Climate Change, 4:30 pm, WB 418–Multi-media presentation entitled “The Color of Climate Change,” illustrating the global impact of Western activities.
Derrick Jensen, 6 pm, WB 418—Author, speaker, and activist Jensen gives a presentation entitled “Endgame: Strategies to Save The Planet” and leads a discussion on environmental issues of our time.
Thursday, Oct. 25th
Climb Mt. Wabash Stair Marathon—we will partner with the Fitness Department, to host a stair marathon in order to bring attention to our stairways and encourage students to conserve energy by using the stairs rather than the elevators (tentative)
Recycling Fair, WB 14th floor—As RU has committed to recycling 50% of its waste, we are hosting a recycling fair to instruct students on how to properly recycle. This will consist of a tabling, fun games, a scavenger hunt, and a live recycled art installation by RU’s art students in the 14th fl. Residence lounge, using RU trash!
Waste Land, 6 pm (film screening)—Academy Award nominated film focusing on the inhabitants and “garbage pickers” in the world’s largest garbage dump outside of Rio de Janeiro (location TBA).
